Caustic soda is one of the highest-volume industrial chemicals in India, and one of the easiest to buy incorrectly. It is sold as flakes, as prills and as a solution, in purities that look interchangeable on a quotation and behave differently in a process, and under a hazard classification that decides whether your site can legally receive it at all. This guide covers what actually varies between offers of "caustic soda", so a purchase decision rests on specification rather than on rate per kilogram.

What is caustic soda?

Caustic soda is sodium hydroxide, NaOH, CAS 1310-73-2 — a strong inorganic base supplied as a white solid or as an aqueous solution. It is strongly hygroscopic, absorbing moisture and carbon dioxide from air, and it dissolves in water exothermically, releasing enough heat to boil an unstirred vessel. Both properties drive how it must be stored and handled rather than being incidental facts about it.

Industrially it is produced by the chlor-alkali process, in which brine is electrolysed to yield caustic soda, chlorine and hydrogen together. That co-production is worth knowing as a buyer: caustic soda pricing does not move independently of chlorine demand, because a producer cannot make one without the others.

Flakes, prills or lye — which form do you need?

The same substance is sold in three physical forms, and the choice is a materials-handling decision more than a chemical one.

  • Solids cost less to transport per kilogram of NaOH, because you are not paying freight on water.
  • Solution avoids dissolution entirely — no exotherm to manage, no dust, but it needs tankage and a heated line in cold conditions to prevent crystallisation.
  • Flakes dust more than prills. Where operators hand-charge open vessels, that difference is a real exposure consideration, not a preference.

What grade of caustic soda do you need?

"Grade" for caustic soda is mostly a purity and impurity-profile question rather than a set of formal named tiers. Technical or commercial grade covers the large majority of industrial use. Where the end product is regulated — food contact, pharmaceutical, or rayon and viscose manufacturing — the relevant grade is defined by the pharmacopoeia or standard your process is audited against, not by the supplier's description.

The practical rule is the same one that applies to every chemical purchase: the grade names an intent, and the certificate of analysis names the batch. Ordering a higher grade than your process needs is money spent on purity you will not use; ordering a lower one can fail an audit long after the material has been consumed.

  • Confirm the assay basis. Caustic soda content can be quoted on a total-alkalinity basis or as NaOH specifically, and the two are not the same number.
  • Check carbonate content if your process is carbonate-sensitive. Caustic soda picks up CO2 from air, so this is partly a function of how the material was stored, not only how it was made.
  • Check chloride and iron where they matter — chloride for corrosion in stainless systems, iron for colour in textile and paper applications.
  • For any regulated end use, confirm the specific standard by name (IP, BP, USP, FCC) rather than accepting "food grade" as a description.

Storage, handling and transport

Caustic soda is classified as corrosive, and the classification on the safety data sheet — not the commercial description — determines your transport and storage obligations. Confirm your carrier is licensed for the relevant dangerous-goods class before dispatch is scheduled, and confirm your site can legally store the quantity arriving before you order it.

Two handling points cause most incidents. Always add caustic soda to water rather than water to caustic soda, so the heat of dissolution is absorbed by the larger volume. And keep it away from aluminium, zinc and tin: caustic soda attacks these metals and liberates hydrogen, which is a fire and explosion hazard in a confined space. Storage vessels, scoops and spill equipment all need to respect that.

  • Store sealed, dry and away from acids — neutralisation with a concentrated acid is violently exothermic.
  • Specify carbon steel, or a suitable plastic, for contact surfaces; avoid aluminium, zinc, tin and galvanised metal.
  • Provide eyewash and emergency shower access wherever the material is opened or charged.

What to check before you pay

Caustic soda is a commodity, so offers differ less on the substance than on everything around it. The checks below are the ones that change delivered cost or usability.

  • Match the COA batch number to the batch on your invoice and on the bag. A COA for a different lot of the same grade is not evidence about your consignment.
  • Normalise the price basis before comparing: packing, freight, loading and payment terms are frequently quoted separately, and a lower per-kilogram rate can arrive more expensive.
  • Confirm the packing your site can actually receive and handle — 25 kg versus 50 kg bags is a manual-handling decision.
  • Confirm dispatch location. Freight on a bulk alkali is a real cost line, so the nearest compliant supplier is often the cheapest one delivered.
